My cats and my dogs are family members. There's no discussion about that. But they are not family members with the full rights and duties of a human family member. But that doesn't change that I try to treat them with the same respect as any other family member. If you look at how the minds treat the members of the Culture with less capacity than them, it is very similar to how the Culture as a whole regards other civilisations.
