I work with bioinformatics for viral sequences in a clinical setting. This is an excellent layman's review. Our lab has steadily increased our sequencing capacity over the last year - but there is still a large gap between what is technologically feasible, and what we actually do as a matter of routine. Perhaps what is missing from the article is that in day to day practice, basic aspects like turnover rate, sample preparation time, and the amount of needed starting material can be decisive.
