You don't _need_ to say exacerbate instead of 'make worse', but it's a cool sounding word, so, like, why not. You wouldnt use it as a replacement for 'make worse' every time, though..there are instances where it just sounds wrong. Defenestrate, though, is a joke word. You can't say defenestrate without tongue firmly in cheek.
