This article is factually inaccurate because it says that "the storm begins" in September 2019. This is untrue, but the media won't tell you that, for two simple reasons: the media likes an easy, catchy story about terrible people like Epstein, and the media doesn't have access to the internal workings of the FSF Board.
If you want to know what really happened, read this account from someone who was on the FSF board at the time: http://ebb.org/bkuhn/blog/2019/10/15/fsf-rms.html http://ebb.org/bkuhn/blog/2019/10/15/fsf-rms.html
The author of that post is extraordinarily well-respected in the free software community - having won, in fact, the FSF's own Award for the Advancement of Free Software just this past Saturday, the day RMS announced his return to the board. He is the coauthor of the AGPL. He's spent his entire career fighting for the GPL and for free software and working with the FSF, and he was a personal friend of RMS. He was executive director of the FSF from 2001 to 2005. He is just about as committed to the free software movement as RMS himself - he's just a couple decades younger.
As he says in his post, he was unable to speak publicly about what was happening until resigning from the FSF board in October 2019. So obviously the media couldn't talk to him, and they wrote about what they saw. Don't believe everything the media tells you.
- opform 6y agoHas Kuhn actually written any substantial piece of software? He seems to have done quite well for himself with the many posts that he sat on for the last 20 years. Open source at work. And he gets an award while the work horses do not.
