I disagree that this represents any kind of "cancel culture". Leaders have always had an outsized scrutiny placed on them to represent their organizations. If it is moreso now, good.
The things RMS said reflect in the least moral incompetence (more likely) and possibly serious character issues (less likely).
I would not want to work for someone who believed as an adult that pedophilia was not harmful if voluntary. I am glad he has subsequently learned better since, but I believe a level of ignorance that great disqualifies a person from leadership.
I would not want to work for someone who believed that Marvin Minsky was credulous enough to think that a young woman, presented to him for sex by a billionaire, was somehow a willing and consenting participant. Marvin Minsky was not stupid.
CEOs get fired for sleeping with prostitutes. CEOs get fired for saying gross or offensive things (when they're caught). This happens all the time. Expecting leaders to act like leaders so that their employees are comfortable working for them is not a new thing, and it is a good thing.
It was not "cancel culture" when Bill Clinton was impeached for sleeping with an employee, it was a good thing (and I was otherwise a Clinton supporter). Leaders need to be held to the highest standards of behavior.
RMS is not fit to lead anything, and FSF was mistaken to rehire him.
