"Why don't artists paint like [15th century Florentine masters] now?"
Our technical tools for making art have outstripped human ability. We've now entered the age of machines making art. Unreal Engine Meta Humans. And NVidia GauGANs that can output any Pixar USD encoded scene from a single "prompt" ;)
Furthermore we rely on visionaries to provide a glimpse at possible futures. Andy Warhol changed the way we saw the world and art itself with a single soup can painting. And predicted "famous for being famous" before it became ubiquitous. But a painting can't have that power anymore. The next great visionary artist will have to work in digital interactive media. But now who is the visionary who will master VR to show us what is to come, when most people simply what to retreat to a halcyon past? The most popular activity in VRChat is standing in front of a mirror, obsessing over one's own avatar self for hours. Unless we re-find the original techno-utopian plot of what the internet was meant to be. "Digital Acid" in the words of Terrence McKenna. A mind-expanding tool of shared consciousness. I think its just going to be more "content".
