I was an intern at Apple while Mac OS X was in beta. It was so slow at the time they had contests on who could introduce the biggest speed ups. Winner would get a top of the line Mac to develop on. I think it wasn’t until 10.3 where pre-linking was introduced, dramatically speeding everything up.

From memory 10.1 was a big improvement. And I think was a free update. I was at the Paris Expo when the Beta was launched! Truely an exciting exciting event! Sadly the beta was all but unusable, despite looking amazing and butter smooth on stage when Jobs did the demo! I think it was the event where the Key Lime iBook was released too. Good times!
