I lived in the Bernal Heights house that the author heard about second-hand (confirmed by a mutual friend), and we've joked how he got this take very wrong. We were living the bohemian techno-hippie lifestyle because we wanted to (right out of college), not because of some ultra-frugality. That, more than the tech jobs, is what enticed our personalities to SF in the first place (we met at school in SoCal). We've split up from that house years ago now but all stayed in the region (SF, Pacifica, Oakland) and do have plenty of personal ties. Great blog otherwise, I must say.
