Auto manufacturers can't just put in a general purpose CPU. Embedded CPUs have functionality general purpose CPUs don't have. Not to mention it would take months to design new hardware and write new software.
The chips being put into cars today were selected at least 5 years ago.
- gscott 6y agoOne Raspberry Pi in every car and problem solved.
- Gibbon1 6y agoFrom an industrial/automotive/aerospace standpoint Raspberry Pi's are hot garbage.
- herewulf 6y agoGranted it's just the Raspberry Pi compute module, but the existence of the Revolution Pi[1] would seem to counter your point. [1]: https://revolution.kunbus.com https://revolution.kunbus.com
- Gibbon1 6y agoIs it going to work when the car it's in has been sitting in the sun in Arizona?
- adamparsons 6y agoI tried this years ago. Lets just say cars have a very unique set of constraints that general purpose dev boards will not survive.
- herewulf 6y agoI'd be interested to hear more about these constraints.
- Matthias247 6y agoAs someone having worked in the automative industry, I can confirm the latter part. It takes about 3-5 years from the start of a new design over going through all qualifications up to shipping a car with it. Even switching to a mostly compatible chip (same ISA, same pinout, etc) will take more than 1 year.
