Just like there's someone at the Air Force sitting at a desk tracking millimeter (probably smaller?) sized space debris, I am sure the Navy has someone who geeks out about every little piece of debris in the Pacific ocean and would be well aware of a new cargo container sized piece of debris that floated in a weird location then suddenly disappeared.
