Looks like all this drama is to give an illusion of control and free speech. Am I missing some other dynamic at play?
- posterboy 6y agoself-censoring is still censoring so reddit inc gets best ofboth worlds, data from the subs and a clean outwardfacing facade.
- VectorLock 6y agoIt can. Reddit can simply remove all the mods from the subreddits and make them public again. Nobody should be under any illusion that they "own" their subreddits.
- fnordfnordfnord 6y agoEh. Reddit is very unlikely to do that. The subreddits would be overrun with trash pretty quickly.
- VectorLock 6y agoThere are legions of people who would be frothing at the mouth for the opportunity to be given mod on a popular subreddit.
- fnordfnordfnord 6y agoYeah and quite a large fraction of those should probably never be granted mod powers over even something as insignificant as a subreddit.
- VectorLock 6y agoI don't disagree with you but the point is that is entirely within Reddit's discretion, not ours.
- TameAntelope 6y agoModerators provide much less unique/irreplacable value than the current narrative suggests. However, the philosophical positioning Reddit has taken historically is that the Moderators own the subreddits, so yanking one away wholly from the moderation group would mark a substantial shift away from that positioning. Maybe that's a good thing for Reddit, though.
- VectorLock 6y ago>yanking one away wholly from the moderation group Not much of a departure -- they've done it.
- TameAntelope 6y agoAnd I've eaten an entire pizza, but that doesn't mean my philosophy of eating generally so I don't become obese is invalid.
- hda2 6y agoI think you got it backwards. Reddit not yanking subreddits is an exception that is only afforded to the largest and most visible subs. Reddit absolutely loves to yank smaller subreddits from mods.
- TameAntelope 6y agoHow would you know what Reddit as an organization likes to do? Seems anthropomorphic to me...
- mc32 6y agoOf course, but that would break some trust where as of now most seizures are of renegade subs. Here if they seize normal subs just because they protest a bad decision by management has the potential of alienating lots of people.
- kumarvvr 6y agoAt this point reddit is like FB, Everyone will grumble but continue using it.
- unethical_ban 6y agoJust like armies technically could curbstomp civilians during protests, but many countries realize that's a bad idea. I don't doubt admins and "powermods" are often the same people, and I'm not defending the morality of reddit as an org. However, the etiquette is that mods have total control over their subs as long as site-wide rules and real laws are not violated.
- zouhair 6y agoSure. Wikipedia can also stop anyone from editing anything. Good luck staying alive.
- commandlinefan 6y agoYou would think that sort of behavior would be the final nail in the coffin for Reddit as a whole - but they've done a lot of things in the past that I would have thought would have been the final nail in the coffin, and they're still as popular as ever.
