I've seen some good summaries in the past, but unfortunately can't find them at the moment. Some things that play into it are the damage from the Cultural Revolution/Great Leap(s) Foward, government corruption with many rules designed to move money up to party leaders, extreme hardship and poverty, as well as recent affluence. As with anything, it's complicated, and I don't understand things well enough to really synthesize it any better.
