Occasionally you'll see someone step up to question the narrative, and they almost always preface their comments with a bit of moral signaling. It's like a bizarre ritual. They'll disavow, insult, or otherwise distance themselves from whichever 'other' is the target of the mob's ire, and only then will they offer up a contrary opinion. I suppose they're responding rationally to the 'karmic' incentive.
