I like this approach. I make it a point to try to understand other industries that I came across in daily life. So much information is out there - you just need to learn basic research techniques and be patient/curious. Learning to understand financial statements is also a big one. Why am I doing this? a) Curiosity. I want to understand how the world works. b) I'm looking for some niche industry market that can be improved, in some plausible way. By the way: There's so much weird market segmentation going on in most other industries than software.
