It'll be about patent licencing fees. Those couple of dollars per chips really add up when you have hundreds of thousands of machines running all over the world.
>RISC is a backwater.
RISC-V has been gaining a lot of attention recently. These chips are shipping in hard drive controllers now, and they're only going to spread.
- ksec 6y agoEven if they are on a Million of Server with $10 per Chip it is still only $10M. Compared to R&D and other cost of designing, Fabbing, and testing, other Tools Set provided by ARM ecosystem this is a rounding error in TCO.
