Maybe I haven't seen enough but I never noticed senior engineers "pushed" to management in BigCos. It's usually someone who specifically optimizes for org climbing, trying to get the manager and the skip to identify them as a "potential" manager. BigCos in my domain seem more than happy keeping you in a terminal senior engineer role.
