A man who went on a hike – and never stopped walking (2017)
- rekabis 6y ago> over the course of three days, he burned most of the books he had collected over his lifetime, one by one, in a barrel in his front yard. Oh, that _heathen._ There are better ways of disposing of unwanted books; a classifieds listing advertising them as being free if they’re all taken in one go would have been even easier than burning them. One does not burn books. That’s just _evil._
- oliv__ 6y agoI bet he derived great pleasure from it though.
- foxyv 6y agoI used to think this myself. However over time, and as the internet and electronic media has replaced my paper book habit, I've begun to see them as what they really are. Stacks of paper with words written on them. Some books are worth the space and the paper. Others not so much. What's important is the words, and those are available anywhere now in archives around the world. Still, I can't imagine the pain of burning my own library. But in the end it will all rot anyways.
- LorenPechtel 6y agoThis guy is an idiot. You don't head out without enough water to reach the next source of water! Personally, I won't solo away from crowds without a beacon and this year since I've been deliberately aiming for empty trails I upgraded that to an inReach with a plan that includes breadcrumbs. If I did get hurt and couldn't push the button search and rescue would likely have my exact location (so long as it was still functional and had an adequate view of the sky the last breadcrumb would be within a few yards of my location) and almost certainly have a very good approximation of it.
