Sci-Hub: Police warn students and universities against 'Pirate Bay of science'
- chovybizzass 6y agoThis is why Andrew Schwartz killed himself...I fully support the piracy of any tax payer funded research.
- ChrisGranger 6y ago> Andrew Schwartz Aaron Swartz.
- allears 6y agoExactly. The only "danger" here is to the profits of Elsevier.
- bediger4000 6y agoWhy on earth would police warn about this? Don't they have real crimes to prevent or cases to solve? Ethically, locking up the research just might be worse than piracy.
- aaron-santos 6y agoThis is a good time to think about which sort of laws the police enforce and what that says about our social priorities.
- pelagicAustral 6y agoI've mailed Alexandra in the past just to thank her for SH, she's really chill, always willing to answer questions and polite. A true emblem to the service she created... I use SH to get access to papers so I can write for university. Without SH I would be looking at at least 500 US just for memberships to papers (some of them only retail as single docs). While I understand people want to keep 'their' knowledge paywalled I think humanity doesn't truly benefit from this attitude, many of this scientific paper repositories are acting as ransomware to knowledge than could potentially benefit a tremendous amount of people should they decide to allow us lesser people benefit from raw knowledge.
- 8bitsrule 6y agoSci-Hub is very useful when you see a mention of an important paper from more than 50 years ago, want to read the original, and find out it's still locked-up for some completely unjustifiable reason. In this case 'police' means 'the City of London Police'. I wonder if they're busy like Beverley Hills police.
- stuaxo 6y agoThe City of London is in effect a separate country in the UK, in the middle of London. OT, but interesting: When the Shard was built across the river in Southwark (in London, but not The City Of London), The City started making noise trying to annex it.
- stevespang 6y agoThis is rather obviously a "hit piece" paid for by Elsevier
- a0-prw 6y agoDear Sci-hub, stay safe in mother Russia. Love ya <3
- zwaps 6y agoAs a scientist, I support sci-hub. We are, sadly, locked in by the predatory publishers. However, I don't know a single peer who does not support open access and even sci-hub. The only party losing are publishers, who add zero value to the process. Like leeches, they suck dry academic researchers, simply because they are the gate-keepers of status and quality signals.
