My biggest issue with rails was more getting my development environment setup. Constant gem compilation issues, I spent hours resolving them. Aside from that I haven't had much trouble stepping into the language or the new environment.
- getsat 15y ago> Constant gem compilation issues, I spent hours resolving them. While this is common, it doesn't really have anything to do with Rails itself. I can't think of any Rails dependencies that have mandatory native extensions off the top of my head.
- pdenya 15y agoMy biggest problems were mysql2 (i had mysql installed and setup already from my php dev stack) and bcrypt-ruby (required for devise)
- getsat 15y agomysql2 is far easier than the original mysql gem. If you want to waste half a day, go try to install the old one. ;) Are you on a Mac, by chance? With XCode/GCC + MacPorts, I've not had many issues with gems. Add to Gemfile, run bundle. Done.
- jamesgeck0 15y agoIf you want SQLite, there's that. Not mandatory, but pretty useful. Fortunately there are the jdbc-sqlite3 and activerecord-jdbcsqlite3-adapter gems for Jruby.
- getsat 15y agoAh, good point, I forgot that Rails defaults to SQLite.
