I worked with pressured vessels, crumbling bottles and popping stuff like this is a thing of nightmares. This man is awesome for recognizing what needed to be done. I wonder how much of this could be understood when they left. Pressure changes in planes are well understood. Maybe sensational story to sell the book?

It had vent valves packed with desiccant and it properly vented pressure as they climbed, however the descent was much faster than the government provided data for them with so the vent valves were undersized so it couldn't gain pressure fast enough for how fast they were descending. I recommend checking out the book, one of the best reads I've read of late, also a lot of insight in how crazy aggressive companies with driven workforces are formed.
