TypeScript vs. JavaScript. What would a project manager prefer?
Hey guys! I am a very much technical guy with 18 years background as a PM.
And yes, I did google this question. But I want more insights.
For the new project we are into, we are about to choose whether to go with TS or stick to the old and confy JS.
Interested to hear your points of view and advice for me - the PM. Does it make any difference for me? What should I expect from devs if we go with either of techs?

- kulikalov 6y ago1. Typescript was around for over 8 years. 2. It's gaining popularity fast. 3. It's undoubtably useful. The answer is yes - use TS.
- dennisbalon 6y agoThanks for your answer but this is about TS. I am meaning to find what are the benefits for me as a project manager? What consequences positive or negative I might experience?
- meowzero 6y agoIs it for front end or back end? For front end dev, I would stick with JS. A lot of resources for the front end is mainly in JS currently, although TS resources are catching up. If it's back-end development, I would do TypeScript. The compilation, tooling, etc. mirrors what most backend devs are used to. Also, the typing will help depending on the size of the code base.
- dennisbalon 6y agoThanks for the answer. Now I get a bit better idea when it comes to saving time/resouces. Another thing seems to be clear is that TS devs need to be more skilled. So interchanging them might be of a slight issue. What do you think?
- meowzero 6y agoMaybe differently skilled? If all you have are front-end engineers, then TS will require a different skill set since front end guys don't usually deal with typed languages. If they have experience in other languages, it might be fine. But if they've been in the front end a long time, it might be hard for them to adjust.
- dennisbalon 6y agoRight, this is an actual reason why someone may have friction working with TS and it is better not to choose that developer. But still the question stands. Like imagine we compare web game dev with JS vs C++. Obviosuly you need to plan much for testing and QA engineers need to be more skilled when we talk about C++. And also I as a PM will plan from the start that using JS and corresponding framerworks might limit me in what I do. Same thing here with TS vs JS. The question stands :)
