As I understand it, electroshock therapy is never performed without consent and has special restrictions to make absolutely sure of this. Patients are anesthetized during the procedure to avoid pain. Yes it has side effects, but it is a last resort for treatment of severe depression that would otherwise ruin the patient's life.
