Russia plans Twitter block in one month if it fails to delete banned content
- yostrovs 6y agoEveryone has their standards of propriety. Some things are inappropriate on Twitter, while in some places Twitter itself is inappropriate. I think it's a good lesson.
- avmich 6y agoRussian standards of propriety are very similar to American. Russian government's ones are not, but that's a different story.
- Barrin92 6y ago>Russian standards of propriety are very similar to American Yeah.. I invite you to post some pictures of an openly gay relationship on social media and show it to the average Russian and that'll cure you of that illusion.
- VistaBrokeMyPC 6y agoTo be fair, much of America responds in a negative way to that already
- yostrovs 6y agoTo be fair, when the Supreme Court handed down the Obergefell decision to grant freedom for same sex marriage, there wasn't an uprising or even a protest that drew any attention. It's an issue that has been accepted by the public at large, even the religious crowd at large.
- avmich 6y agoThere is a good song, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMmEt1sL7GU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMmEt1sL7GU , "Ours and theirs", by Alexey Ivaschenko and Georgiy Vasiliev, which lists a bunch of differences - which, of course, exist even between pretty close cultures - and, characteristically for authors, concludes with "there are many things which you can't divide on ours and theirs". It's like talking about ideological divide between USSR and USA - even back in late 1980s it was proclaimed loudly, but nobody came out defending USSR in late 1991. Gay relationships are nothing new in Russia, and official condemnation doesn't mean it runs deeply against cultural grain. Don't forget - Russian people and Russian government are strongly opposing entities. On the other hand, Russian expats in USA have comparatively little problem adjusting to American culture. Standards are indeed very similar - more so than, for example, in comparison with some Asian or Middle East cultires.
- tandav 6y agowe should more use self-hosted / github hosted personal blogs instead of twitter This is true libertarian way to blog
- alistairSH 6y agoAnd Russia would just ban GitHub, no?
- tandav 6y agowell, then - simple vps servers + eg Flask/ http.server
- franklampard 6y agoHow do you plan to scale that?
- deleted 6y ago[deleted]
- valdiorn 6y agoGithub hosted anything suffers from the same problem, obviously. Russian govt. would just pressure github to remove any content they don't want.
- nickik 6y agoThe libertarian way to is to use what-ever you feel like.
- Pick-A-Hill2019 6y agoDumb question but is this the "Take 2" version of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26409132 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26409132 or is it the same thing / a dupe? 100% not sure since the link says last modified 16 March
