You Wouldn't Subscribe to a Hammer
- bluefirebrand 6y agoPeople maybe don't "subscribe" to a hammer, but people might rent-to-own one. I wonder if software couldn't manage a lease style payment for a license. Paying a recurring subscription to something I only use once in a while is a non-starter for me. But paying a single high upfront cost is also not great. So maybe a mix, like a phone plan. You have a higher overall payout but once you've paid it off it's yours. Probably not really necessary for most things though.
- jfengel 6y agoLots of places have bike shops where you pay a membership fee to use their tools. There's not a lot of hammering in bikes, but you do have the ability to subscribe to chain breakers, pedal wrenches, and bearing cup presses. Tools you may not need every day, but need intermittent access to. A software package is more analogous to a tool set than to a single hammer. It always does a lot of things. So the price is higher than buying one small tool. It's much more like paying to access a workshop... which does happen.
