I really like these projects but as an apple investor I am torn with the feelings... Apple hard ware isn’t that expensive and the software isn’t particularly great. I had a apple lc II and I own a Macintosh apple IIe I have used a kvm based qemu image and the experience is good enough for development but not much else and with the addition of aws apple images with Big Sur can’t we just use things like that. I know we want this for free and not pay apple. I know I am an apple investor. But a vm is a poor way to experience apple products. My modded Mac m1 with the thermal pad mod will be the fastest MacBook Air possible but the battery might suffer. I am not saying don’t do these this for fun. But I’ve used apple products. These things will encourage new users to use apple products. Do it but buy an old Mac and give apple hardware a chance. If you don’t like it just return it and go back to your awesome qemu kvm pass through setup that supports nvidia hardware. What I am saying is apple hardware is pretty good and if you like the software you might like the hardware. And if you dont like either just buy the stock.

- heavyset_go 6y agoUsually stockholders on HN pretend to be incredulous fans of whatever company they're invested in, but this one said the quiet part out loud.
- samb1729 6y agoNot so much a written comment as a stream of consciousness dictated into a microphone and posted unmodified, apparently.

- dastx 6y agoNot sure what to make of this comment but I'll bite. > Apple hard ware isn’t that expensive and the software isn’t particularly great You're clearly not in the loop. Apple hardware in general is significantly more expensive than the equivalent with other hardware manufacturers. Often with not a lot of innovation, if at all. They do have a much simplified UI, and Things Just Work(TM), but outside that their hardware is mostly mediocre. There is obviously always exceptions to the rule, and in my opinion those are Apple M1 (which is only relatively recent), and their track pads. I'm an Apple investor, and honestly things like this don't make a dent in Apple's coffers. It's not gonna affect their stock price. To even imply otherwise is ridiculous. The majority of Apple buyers are average Joes and Janes who don't really want to do this whole VM thing. They barely care enough to run a VM for docker support. Outside those, there's also the average Joe and Jane who barely understand what a VM is.
