- dang 6y agoProposed bills rarely go anywhere, and so are mostly off topic on HN: https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20bills&sort=byDate&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que... IIRC, it's rare in Canada for private members' bills to ever get enacted or even taken seriously, so that would be even more true in this case—no?
- grawprog 6y agoSorry, I didn't realize that. I only posted it because ubi like systems tend to be a topic that gets brought up on hn a fair amount and I haven't seen many large proposed ubi type bills like this before, even if it's not likely to pass. I figured the proposed ideas may warrant discussion.
- cbhl 6y agoI believe the Canadian proposals so far have only been "guaranteed", not "universal" -- that is, the benefit will phase out as you earn more above a certain threshold. As the existing welfare, employment insurance, and student loan programs show, it's easy to introduce (accidentally or not) a "claw back" zone. The Canadian government was very aggressive with cash transfers early in the pandemic ("$2000 CAD/month", during CERB). I think that Trudeau has signaled quite clearly that they don't intend to go down this road, though. They phased out CERB in favor of (mostly) wage subsidies to businesses. There's a bit more UBI talk from opposition party members than before, but I don't think we're yet at the point of a committee or a pilot actually happening.
- dang 6y agoNo worries!
- retrac 6y agoExtremely rare. Unknown for a bill that involves major spending. This bill is symbolic.
