I think docker and VMs are providing a different kind of abstraction. Docker is abstraction on an OS level where as a VM is abstraction on machine code level. Like, can I run my x64 compiled go binary on an M1 docker host? (Might be, because of Rosetta translating x64 byte code to M1 Arm byte code, much like the CLR translate IL to x64)
I think at the time when Java an .Net where invented, there were more CPU architectures/ISA around than today (like Sparc, Itanium, MIPS). I think having only 3 of them (PowerPC, ARM, x64) is what made VMs “obsolete”, not docker.
