I wrote a regex engine, had to create a huge autogenerated test suite to flush out all the corner cases. The typical matching rules are fiendishly difficult—this is a nice illustration of how much deep magic there is in our quotidian stacks. I am looking forward to digging into the two complicated patterns to understand how they work.
