The biggest blocker for me is still multiplayer games with anticheat that doesn't officially support Linux (try it unofficially and expect to get banned).
- ekianjo 6y agoYeah, there's always that risk. I wonder how Valve expects to tackle that down the road.
- smoldesu 6y agoIt's going to be a very long road, but Valve has definitely been working on it. Through a combination of Kernel patches and WINE magick, they seem to have something cooking up. It's anyone's guess as to how effective (or accepted) it will be.
- pja 6y agoEAC supports Linux right now, but games publishers have to choose to turn on that particular feature.
- smoldesu 6y agoWhen you say "supports Linux", do you mean that it has a native version for Linux titles, or are you saying that it has an option to not flag Proton/Wine users?
- dogma1138 6y agoFor EAC to work on Linux you need a native client, I’m guessing the next thing valve should work on is some proton compatibility layer that could link the Linux client with the emulated game.
- ekianjo 6y agoActually, they (Codeweavers) are actually working on redesigning WINE to make it possible to support Windows-EAC.
- Google234 6y agoDo people know how EAC works? It’s looking inside the windows kernel loooking in the areas not well covered by patch guard to see if I trusted code is running. Providing it false data to look through in Wine defeats its purpose.
- Rhedox 6y agoThat was a one man project and never really went anywhere.
- marcodiego 6y agoGoogling "EAC supports linux" does not returns anything useful on first results. Would you mind to share your source?
- ekianjo 6y agohttps://twitter.com/timsweeneyepic/status/1150536446807334914?lang=en https://twitter.com/timsweeneyepic/status/115053644680733491... from the mouth of Sauron itself: > Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic > Jul 15, 2019 > EAC has native Linux binaries in beta, supporting several native games in active release. This missing link is native Linux anti-cheat integration with Wine/Proton so that games running under Wine are protected. This is in the works but is a big task.
- Google234 6y agoIs it even possible to verify and trust the code running in the Linux kernel? If not then it’s a hopeless endeavor.
- stryan 6y agoThey do have a Wine-version of their anti-cheat (or at least they did in the past). SMITE used to use it, but stopped for some reason.
- mhh__ 6y agoValve have a big stick if they want to make companies support multiplayer from Proton.
- dEnigma 6y agoBut that stick sure has gotten quite a bit smaller ever since the Epic Store launched.
- fayten 6y agoMaybe, but steam beat its record of most users two months in a row. February 8th had 26.4 million concurrent users. https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/esports/steam-twice-breaks-record-with-264-million-concurrent-users/ar-BB1dw9db https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/esports/steam-twice-breaks-...
- Tanath 6y agoSuch bans are rare, and usually get reversed if it was only triggered due to Linux.
- dogma1138 6y agoThe issue isn’t as much as bans but that the online multiplayer service won’t let you log in or that servers will auto kick anyone who fail the AC health check when they join.
