I know this is completely unrelated to the main discussion, but have you tried RVM? I'm not an experienced Ruby developer, but I had some issues with the default ruby installation that RVM fixed completely. Try installing it directly from their site (its a one liner) instead of from repo. EDIT: Had some issue posting.
