Well that truism only misses nuance, it's really true you can/could/will do anything you want, If you do believe in free will after all. I would just add the stoicism on internal/external locus of control. IMHO the part parents mostly miss, is you cannot control how others, as in other humans, society, et all, will react to you/your actions/your creations, or if you will even be noticed or not before you're out of the game... Just look at all the bullshit some scientists, artists, businessmen, etc or anyone trying to challenge the status quo, had to go through just for the mere fact that their ideas didn't match those of their time...
