Scrollbars are terrible UI. You have to drag them in the opposite direction to the way the way you want things to move. How far you need to drag the bar to move a certain distance is dependent on the length of the whole document. In general, I think many mistakes were made on early GUIs that simply became entrenched and it is now hard for people to imagine them being any different.
I long ago disabled scroll bars in my terminal and text editor and I never miss them.

- aylmao 6y agoI usually have them disabled too, yeah. I think with modern cursor devices they become redundant— you don't need a UI element to move around the document with the mouse/trackpad, because the mouse/trackpad usually has built-in scrolling with a wheel or gesture. I can see how in the past they were a necessary element though.
- jonny_eh 6y agoThey're useful for at least knowing what IS scrollable and how much more distance there is left to scroll.
- pnt12 6y agoDrag down to see the content below, up to see above. Total scroll height is 100% of the page and the bar will have an height equivalent to the portion of page you're seeing, allowing to predict from a simple glance how long a page is. I'd say it's quite beautiful in its functional simplicity.
