I have a NUC that I run proxmox on and have several machines spun up inside of it, connected to a synology NAS. I think I spent 1500 bucks on the system total, and for an equivalently priced AWS system would have been hundreds of dollars a month, so I feel like it's paying for itself. Only downside is the local internet provider only offers 5Meg upload, so I'm not going to be serving any high traffic websites, but for everything else is great.
