Apple will randomize Mac serial numbers starting this year

• jaytaylor 6y ago
Seems obviously problematic. Hopefully Apple will make a SN# lookup DB available? I wonder what the big benefit is of changing the ID scheme in this instance. I'm imagining a future where you take your laptop to the manufacturer and they insist the hardware doesn't match with the random number! Makes me chuckle.

They already have a serial number lookup tool for support/warranty coverage. https://checkcoverage.apple.com/ https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

    What is the obvious problem?

That you can no longer tell what model it is from the outside. Quite inconvenient.

I’m used to other manufacturers whose serial numbers are essentially random. The sky hasn’t fallen.

And what will they call them, Apple random numbers?
