I dislike this line of reasoning. Gender equality is important because equality is important in and of it self. When people point to studies that show "teams with women perform better" as the reason to push for diverse hiring, I think it subtly implies that if this were not true then we would not need to worry about it, and creates an opening for people to quibble over research methodology.
