I recognize that they/them can refer to a singular. But it can also refer to a plural. I have been in multiple conversations where the use of they/them had to be explicitly disambiguated. As in, the person had to clarify that they, ahem, they were using the pronoun “they” to refer to a single person. It wasn’t a calamity, but it was a little confusing. So again, I am not opposed to folks choosing pronouns. I am just saying that it is different, difficult, and will take some time for people to adapt.
