I am amused about these perceptions of bias in “tech”, especially coming from those with little experience elsewhere. I work in tech and also in the tugboat industry. My consulting work has brought me into organizations in many industries. Tech is much better at being fair to minorities and the otherwise disadvantaged than non-tech industries. I don’t know how people end up complaining about tech without noticing the rest of the world around them. Have they wondered why the people who work on their car or dispose of their garbage are primarily men? Of the misogynists and racists with whom I interact, tech has the least representation.
- ausbah 6y agothis is just a rehash of "you shouldn't complain because other people have it worse"
- mcculley 6y agoNot at all. I think the characterization of tech as especially bad is incorrect and put forward only by those with no experience in other industries.
- mcculley 6y agoAs I thought more about this, I realized (again) that the reason this happens is that people in tech are more likely to have blogs and other ways to make themselves heard. They don't see their privilege. This article could easily be titled "4 Times I Felt Discriminated Against for Being a Female" and drop the word "Developer". The oppressed in other industries don't have as much power. This reinforces the case that those who oppose the tech industry having an outsize influence on culture.
- logan42 6y agoNo, that’s totally what your initial statement conveys. Whether that’s your intent is a different thing.
- Decker87 6y agoIt's simple. Tech pays well, so that's where people feel there is the highest leverage to change outcomes.
