Overbroad DMCA Takedown Campaign Almost Wipes Dictionary Entries from Google
- sickofparadox 6y agoIt seems like there should be some sort of process within these large companies like Google or Twitter to rate limit or even restrict companies that repeatedly abuse DMCA claims in manners such as this. If you do something as absurd as try to claim copyright over the word outstanding and take down Merriam-Webster, there should be some kind of punishment, at least a slap on the wrist.
- Sohcahtoa82 6y agoSending false DMCA Takedown requests needs to be punishable with a fine per offense. Poorly implemented automation can't be allowed to happen like this. One of the worst cases I've ever seen was YouTube taking down TheFatRat's own song because some record label claimed to own it. https://twitter.com/thisisthefatrat/status/1072933046939193344?lang=en https://twitter.com/thisisthefatrat/status/10729330469391933... EDIT: Apparently filing false DMCA claims is indeed a criminal action. I guess it's either very poorly enforced, or very strictly defined as to not apply to most situations that are obviously wrong.
- hypertele-Xii 6y agoYouTube has its own non-DMCA takedown system. It is a private cooperation between YouTube and big media. There is no penalty for bad faith takedown.
