I used to work for a well-known tech blog, and I kinda saw this happen in realtime.
It's all about speed. The way articles would work would be that they'd be posted immediately by the author, and edited after. Sometimes they wouldn't actually get edited (after all, it was already out there and the views were already trending downward after an hour). And at best, the editing would just be spelling and grammar rather than structural, because you can't change a live blog post that much.
So, the result was first drafts of articles were basically the final draft.
I always hated it, but I don't know what else can be done? Google and Twitter and others give a huge boost to the first one with the story, and there's no much reward for doing it right.
