GDP is not the only or the best metric to look at a country’s or society’s well being, life quality or even the economy.
I live in DK now, having moved from the US. I get paid less than before, but I don’t need to save for health insurance and the off chance that I might get some expensive disease that the insurance company wouldn’t cover!
Neither do I need to save for paying super expensive day care, or child education, or college costs of my son.
So, money exchange is different when you don’t pay for a lot of services like in the US.
The experience we felt when our little boy was born was unforgettable. We drive to the hospital, get treated very well, get a room to stay close to the hospital with service from resident nurses in case we needed help or education about taking care of the baby, and all through this without ever thinking about money or bills....! Let that sink in. Everyone who lives here gets that treatment and gets to enjoy the baby being born instead of the financial burden. I will happily pay my 37% income tax and high VAT if it brings happiness and fairness to all. It’s not perfect, but it’s the closest there is.
