It's easy to refute articles which treat EU as a single entity, instead of what it is - 27 countries with different law bases, languages and income levels.
Median p.a income in US is 43k USD.
Median p.a. income in Germany is 33k USD.
Median p.a income in Bulgaria is 4k USD.
With such big outliers all the equations regarding EU as 1 entity will be off by such a wide margin that it'll be useful only to get the conclusions you (the presenter) want.
Here's more subtle factors though:
* how much does healthcare cost?
* how much does bringing a child up cost?
* how much does education cost?
* how much does real-estate cost?
With all that, I think that unless you're the top earner and can take advantage of favorable taxation schemes, favorable healthcare schemes, favorable living location, you're better of being median in western europe.
