Easy Microsoft Voice Dictation with Win+H
- rajlego 6y agoRecently I started to have hand problems wish necessitated using my keyboard and mouse less. At first I tried talon voice which has and unreliable voice dictation system on windows. I then stumbled upon Microsoft's own built into windows voice dictation which I found performed really well. Some of the shortcuts and inability to trigger it with voice confuse me a bit but generally it's still been quite useful. (this comment was written mostly with voice dictation)
- aksss 6y agoCant you set Cortana up in an “always listen” mode such that it could start a dictation session for you? I’ve not tried but seems like something that would make sense. May have to go try that just to satisfy curiosity now. :)
- rajlego 6y agoI'm using windows LTSC so no Cortana unfortunately though some point might try normal windows again
- melling 6y agoSomeone submitted this camera mouse solution that might be useful https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26380939 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26380939
- rajlego 6y agoIt's pretty insane I tried it out and it actually works fairly well! my hand recovered a bit and I found a better to use mouse so I don't think I'll make it my main driver for now but if my hand gets bad again I might give it another try
- livre 6y agoYou need a good microphone and a relatively noise free environment for this to work well. My built in microphone never worked, I had to use my phone as a microphone because it has decent noise reduction and doesn't pick up my laptop's internal humming. It fails to recognize most of the words or picks up passing cars as commands (I live on a busy street). It works better in English than in Spanish even though Spanish is my native language. It consistently fails to recognize words that start with the letter d (but when I pronounce something that starts with t it sometimes thinks it's a d). It only recognizes Spanish if I speak in a Mexican or Spaniard accent. I hope this tech keeps improving because it could speed up a lot of tasks but as it is right now it's a source of frustration and leaves a lot to be desired.
- rajlego 6y agoOn my main computer I have a pretty good mic so I thought the same but it also worked well on my laptop which has a not great mic though I don't have much background noise so maybe that helps and I speak with a fairly standard American accent
- masonic 6y agoMy Dictation pane has been stuck on "Initializing..." for 30+ minutes.
