The thing that fascinates me the most about this is that the isolated system remained viable over such a huge length of time. Every organism was molded by evolution to the conditions there. If it hadn't been discovered, it might have lasted for millions more years. That stability is miraculous. I love the ideas of the long now foundation, but I'm not sure 10,000 year thinking is enough. How would our society need to evolve, for humanity to still be here in a million years?
