What I found really helpful in beginning to understanding hypothesis testing is Allen Downey's blog post[1] about how a lot of confusion about p-value calculation stems from the historical reliance on inflexible, opaque analytic methods to approximate the p-value. The rise of cheap, fast computation allows simulation to replace those complex analytic methods, which makes understanding p-values a lot easier.
