I wouldn't learn any programming language for the sake of it, some list of reasons. I also wouldn't learn one because its the best tool for the job. The best tool for a job is the one you know best. I'd learn a language based on it's practicality to keep the lights on at home. Where I live in the US, that's Java, C# and Javascript. Of course one can go beyond that, and really diving into many things is fine, but if you focus on one of the "big 3" first, if you do want to stop branching out, you're left with a geographically broadly applicable way to feed a family.
