- wccrawford 15y agoIf you're the only one eating it, then you are responsible for your own health. You take your chances. If you sell it to others, you now fall under the same regulations as regular farmers. Disclaimer: I am not a laywer, etc etc.
- kiiski 15y agoThey say they give that food to their employees and friends so they're not really saying everyone should grow their own food (just that people should eat locally/naturally grown food). Besides, you wouldn't realistically grow everything yourself anyway.
- grannyg00se 15y agoIf you choose to grow your spinach in a cattle ranch you will be responsible for your own problem. The best part is that since I'm growing my own spinach, your lack of judgement does not affect me. So I don't need anybody regulating you. I'm quite happy regulating myself, and letting you regulate yourself.
- hnsmurf 15y agoMost problems like that come from the industrialized food supply. You'd be pretty hard pressed to get e coli from spinach you grew yourself.
- tdfx 15y agoEven if you have chickens walking around and pooping throughout your garden?
- michaeldhopkins 15y agoThat is like saying you shouldn't exercise because you might run in front of a car. Actually, it's like saying exercise gives you diabetes and heart attacks because the exact opposite situation is true.
- da_dude4242 15y agoI'm not saying it's a bad idea. But I think alot of people take for granted the role our current system of agriculture plays. International food trade plays a large part in maintaining peaceful relations. It's what props agrarian society. It's the foundation of civilization. Food plays a greater social role than just providing nutrition. Ideally, any disruption to the establishment would leverage these relationships.
- michaeldhopkins 15y agoI think the international and domestic food policies of many countries help to cause wars and starvation. But if I had to choose between having and eating my cake, I would prefer to let international relations slide in favor of growing food with my family, neighbors and co-workers, because I would rather increase the peace in relationships I can directly affect and growing and sharing my own food is a great way to do that. In fact, I do make that choice. Because I can see its benefits directly, I also encourage others to do it. As for agrarian society I think we disagree on what it is. Typically the fundamental unit of agrarian society is the family farm, something virtually every developing country wants to consolidate and eliminate in favor of a city-based manufacturing and service economy.
- da_dude4242 15y ago>I think the international and domestic food policies of many countries help to cause wars and starvation That's my point. Food production affects social stability in ways that aren't immediately obvious. >But if I had to choose between having and eating my cake, I would prefer to let international relations slide in favor of growing food with my family, neighbors and co-workers, because I would rather increase the peace in relationships I can directly affect and growing and sharing my own food is a great way to do that You'd prefer to let other countries spiral into war and starvation? >In fact, I do make that choice. Because I can see its benefits directly, I also encourage others to do it. I grow my own food as well but I have doubts as to whether it is a scalable arrangement.
