I have full confidence that I, a literal nobody in academia, could theoretically write a mathematical paper, submit it to an appropriate journal, and have it accepted if it were correct and good enough. I don't know for sure, but I suspect there are disciplines in which this would not be the case, and that most papers in those disciplines are probably written in Word.
