Ask HN: What heuristics do you use for sound decision-making?
This question was prompted by James Clear: https://twitter.com/JamesClear/status/1367989110078640130
1. How do you distinguish which decisions should be made quickly and which ones should be made slowly? Impact, or cost-benefit, is my primary heuristic. As part of this, reversibility is often a simple proxy for cost and is valuable to consider.
2. How do you guard against emotional bias? I catalog my known biases (e.g., tech optimist) and engage reasonable people who disagree.
3. How do you guard against cognitive bias? The list of cognitive biases is painfully long. Analyzing contentious debates is one way to expose logical fallacies made and logical arguments missed, but hopefully people can suggest more efficient methods of minimizing cognitive bias.
