Show HN: I Moved into My Home Office/Shed
- croutonwagon 6y agolol. Classic software guy “I’m too lazy to learn to drywall, I’ll just use OSB instead” I started laughing hard enough my wife checked on me. Proceeds to sand, trim, treat and putty 20 sheets of OSB to achieve a finished product. It does look nice. I commend you on that. OSB is serviceable though. My stairs are painted OSB in my house. What type of power you run out there? I assume you are gonna need at least a big and noisy window unit (for the warm) and oil heater (for the cold). Or going mini split? So at least a 30amp breaker?
- aarondf 6y agoHa it's not _entirely_ laziness, I was going for a look too. Glad you like the look! :D I have a separate panel out here, branched off of the house. I think it has two 20amp breakers and space for another. I have a portable dual-hose A/C unit that draws in outside air and also exhausts outside. I'm able to keep it around 70 without it running all the time. Texas summer will be the real test though.
- croutonwagon 6y agoYeah I’ve been looking at upgrades. I’m working in what is basically a “finished” garage. Not well insulated (but is insulated), windows are leftovers. No finished flooring, just a collection of rugs no longer in the main living space. So it’s the rug room that doubles as storage. I’m using a window unit, which is very loud, sometimes even audible on a conference call. Been looking at a mini split for a while. It does keep it cool. Though the florida bugs sometimes get in through the AC itself.
- aarondf 6y agoThis is the unit I ended up going with: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DYDH3N5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08DYDH3N5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b... It works great. Cheaper than a mini-split, but certainly not cheap!
- croutonwagon 6y agoNice. I haven’t tried that one. I did have a portable for a time, though not a dual hose. My current one allow schedules and such. I actually went full window unit because of the noise. My theory was motor outside noise < motor inside noise. In reality it’s not terribly discernible. And these units lasted me 3 years before really starting to show their wear in the florida heat and constant running. Startup draw can be noticeable now. Once this one bites it, I’m probably going to go mini split.
- liminalsunset 6y agoOut of curiosity, does the use of OSB on the surface contribute much to indoor formaldehyde levels? Growing up, my parents avoided buying furniture or houses made of composite wood materials with lots of exposed glue out of concerns of offgassing. Would be interesting to see what a HCHO monitor reads over time.
- aarondf 6y agoSo far, so good! I have a Mila air purifier, and dual-hose A/C that brings in fresh air and vents exhaust, and I leave the french door open quite a bit. I have an AirThings air monitor and the VOC reading on it so far has been normal... so I guess that's good?
- lioeters 6y agoImpressive! Much roomier and well-furnished than what I'd imagined from the word "shed". This is a proper office space, love the French double door. All in all, very enjoyable writing and in-progress photos, thank you for sharing.
- fiftyacorn 6y agoThat's big shed. I was expecting one like roald Dahl's or Dylan Thomas's.
