The perhaps uncomfortable fact is that there is simply no difficult enough problems in vast majority of our businesses (Twitter? Airbnb?), that require the deep fundamentals. Most of the wheels have been invented already. Today's high level of developer compensation is a result of business potentials rather than the need for hard science like rocket science. Once we reach the point of saturation, either due to reduced business demand or increased supply, or both, most of us can't maintain the same level of income. There is a small subset that still can but it will be hyper competitive and can't take in that many people.
